As you likely know, I have a lot of appreciation for conventional medicine. Especially when it comes to emergency medicine! But even before ending up in the hospital, I grew up with a distaste for hippy dippy tree hugging medicine, and I thought naturopaths were in that camp. Boy was I wrong. I actually was wrong about A LOT of things surrounding medicine!
As it turns out, naturopathic doctors, or NDs, go through just as much (if not more) school, residencies, and fellowships as a medical doctor (MD)! They undergo rigorous academic programs studying subjects like anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology, ensuring that they have a solid foundation in conventional medicine.
So both NDs and MDs have a comprehensive understanding of the human body and medical sciences, but the focus of their training beyond this differs.
Conventional medicine is awesome when it comes to saving lives… When it comes to restoring health, conventional medicine falls short.
Unlike the pharmaceutical and surgical focus of MDs, naturopaths take a deep dive into natural and holistic approaches to health and healing, recognizing and supporting the body’s ability to heal itself, rather than fighting against pathogens and disease.
